Health Monitoring Rotation

 

Veterinarians in this rotation will be responsible for the following activities:

  1. Rodent sentinel program
    1. Monitor sentinel placement, determine correct number and time of sentinel placement, and coordinate submission of animals to RADIL
    2. Monitor dirty bedding transfer program and ensure compliance
    3. Investigate abnormal results on quarterly health monitoring reports and contact PI’s with adverse results.
    4. Prepare quarterly health monitoring reports and maintain a log of these reports
    5. Coordinate sentinel activities with Sherrie Neff AHT
    6. Update the relevant SOP’s as needed
  2. Quarantine program (all species)
    1. When an animal order for quarantine animals is received, contact the PI and find out what their goals are for the new animals and where they want animals to be housed and for how long
    2. Contact the shipping institution to get health reports on animals
    3. Get background information on new strain(s)
    4. Check if quarantine space is available
    5. Consult with Assistant Director before giving permission to ship animals
    6. Coordinate results with shipping clerk, Cindy Dehaven
    7. Ensure sentinels are scheduled and placed with shipment when animals arrive
    8. Monitor animals while in quarantine and ensure sentinels are collected on time and submitted to RADIL.
    9. Contact PI when animals are ready to move, or if adverse results are found.
    10. Update the relevant SOP’s as needed
  3. Preventive Medicine program
    1. Perform yearly physical exams, vaccinations, and deworming for larger species
    2. Physical exams of newly arrived Class B dogs and cats
    3. Update program when indicated
    4. Update the relevant SOP’s as needed
  4. Maintain copies of all RADIL, VMDL, and other laboratory submissions in the rotation folder
  5. Other duties as assigned by the OAR Assistant Director or Director

ACQA / Training Rotation
 

Veterinarians in this rotation will be responsible for the following activities:

  1. Perform protocol reviews
  2. Lead monthly facility inspections and prepare the reports
  3. Attend ACUC functions
  4. Coordinate Rat and Mouse Handling Workshops, schedule other post-docs to help as needed for each workshop
  5. Other activities as determined by the ACQA Director or OAR Director/ Assistant Director
  6. Participate in PI/Investigator staff training and OAR staff training programs

Investigator Support/ Collaboration Rotation
 

This rotation can be divided into 2 separate rotations both having the same function, but separated by species. Investigator Support I for rodents, and Investigator Support II for rabbits and larger species. Veterinarians in this rotation will be responsible for the following activities:

  1. Perform sample collection for PI’s
  2. Perform anesthesia for PI’s
  3. Perform surgeries for PI’s
  4. Train PI’s and staff to perform above procedures as well as monitoring of animals and properly filling out pink cards
  5. Monitor surgical and anesthesia procedures performed by PI’s
  6. Monitor pink cards to ensure animals receive adequate post surgical monitoring including analgesics
  7. Compare protocols, procedures and pink cards to ensure all are the same

Management Rotation
 

Veterinarians in this rotation will be responsible for the following activities:

  1. Review and update SOP’s as assigned
  2. Assist with facility planning/ renovation projects
  3. Participate in cost center accounting and per diem calculations
  4. Monitor animal census calculations and monthly billing
  5. Review OHSP- Occupational Health and Safety Program reports and veterinary reviews
  6. Review IBC- Institutional Biosafety Committee reports and actions
  7. Other activities as determined by the OAR Assistant Director or Director
  8. Attend relevant management meetings with the OAR Director or Assistant Director
  9. Lead bi-weekly OAR staff meeting
  10. Attend weekly OAR management meetings


Veterinary Care Rotation
 

Veterinarians in this rotation will be responsible for the following activities:

  1. Provide veterinary care for all sick and injured animals on campus during normal business hours (7:30am - 5:00pm M-F)
  2. Contact PI’s and give them regular updates of the status of their cases.
  3. Monitor blue and green cards to ensure animals are receiving appropriate treatments and animals are responding to therapy
  4. Coordinate significant health findings with the Health Monitoring rotation and alter health monitoring schedules as indicated. Both rotations may need to review relevant laboratory findings and determine an appropriate course of action
  5. Prepare a weekly treatment list and make the list available to the weekend facility supervisor, the veterinarian on call, and other veterinarians
  6. Maintain copies of all RADIL, VMDL, and other non-health monitoring submissions in the rotation folder
  7. Other activities as determined by the OAR Assistant Director or Director
