| Published and unpublished sources have been utilized freely in the preparation of this handbook. Published material used verbatim or as major source material is referenced. Much of the material in the section “Specific Issues in Increasing the Humaneness of Animal Experimentation” is paraphrased from a similar handbook in use at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas. The section on “Handling Common Laboratory Species” is modified from a training syllabus in use at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland. We thank colleagues at MU and other institutions for suggestions on the format and subject matter included in the handbook.
